A Dry Film Thickness (DFT) meter (also known as a coating thickness gauge) is a non-destructive testing instrument used to measure the thickness of paint, protective coatings, plated layers, or powder coatings after they have completely cured and dried.
Working Principles
Digital DFT meters primarily rely on three technology types based on the substrate material:
- Magnetic Induction: Used for non-magnetic coatings (like paint, zinc, or powder coat) applied over ferrous metal substrates like steel or iron.
- Eddy Current: Used for non-conductive coatings (like paint, anodizing, or enamel) applied over non-ferrous, conductive metals like aluminum, copper, or brass.
- Ultrasonic: Used for non-metallic substrates (such as plastic, wood, or glass) or multi-layer coating inspection.
