A Pug Machine—most commonly referred to as a Pug Cutting Machine—is a portable, semi-automatic motor-driven gas cutting unit widely used in metal fabrication, construction sites, shipyards, and heavy engineering industries.
The machine earned the colloquial name "Pug" due to its compact size, sturdy low-slung chassis, and tractor-like movement along tracks, reminiscent of a small, determined bulldog.
1. Core Operating Principle
The primary function of a pug machine is to automate oxy-fuel gas cutting or plasma torch movement across metal plates.
Instead of an operator manually holding a cutting torch—which leads to uneven speeds, wavy lines, and jagged edges—the pug machine mounts the torch onto a motor-driven tractor. The machine travels across a metal surface or along a specialized aluminum/steel track at a controlled, uniform speed set by an electric motor.
By maintaining a consistent travel speed and precise standoff distance from the torch nozzle to the plate, the machine produces smooth, straight, clean cuts with minimal slag and material waste.
